Melbourne needs public transport

Hells yeah.

Public transport in this city is fine, so long as you live near a railway station or tram stop. Heaven help you though if you live in the outer suburbs and don’t have a set of wheels to get around.

Many outer suburbs have no train or tram service and must rely on bus services. That would be OK if the buses were reliable, ran frequently and went where you needed to go. Too often though its none out of three.

Its almost impossible to cram all the deficiencies of the public transport system into one post, but here is a quick list:

  • No bus services at all in some new suburbs
  • Very infrequently run weekday services (once an hour or less)
  • Weekday services that finish at 6pm or even earlier
  • Nonexistent services at nights or weekends
  • Bizarre anomalies in the zoning system. For example, some bus services from Chadstone SC operate in Zone 2, others in Zone 1. Where’s the consistency?
  • Ridiculous urban planning that makes it almost impossible to service new suburbs with any type of public transport

The bottom line? Don’t even think about living in Melbourne without a car.

or, when looking at a place to stay in melbourne, take transport into consideration. There are plenty of places in different price ranges close to train or tram lines.

if you dont like it mark … piss off back to newcastle

Now that you mention it, Newcastle has trains to Sydney 24/7 and buses everywhere, not to mention good beaches, and no winter …

But, you see my young friend Trent, it only works if the places you need to get to are also close to transport. I live close to a station, but I still need a car, so ner.

You’re obsessed!!

My 1st time to read your blogging.

Have a great Sunday,
