Five word coffee shop reviews #5: Conquest of the five word reviews

That’s right: another batch of cafe reviews is upon us. Read on for coffee shop reviews from all over Melbourne. Remember to submit your own,  whether from Melbourne or otherwise. See the list in its entirety here.

Yummy’s Café, Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre, Mulgrave
Decent coffee and free paper

Medallist Bar, Tullamarine Airport
See the planes. Adequate coffee.

Elfresco, Bentleigh
Average coffee, food is better

Café Etcetera, Chadstone
Good coffee, yes indeed, etc.

Villa & Hut, Southland, DFO Cheltenham etc
Enjoy a coffee with Buddha

Guava Bean, Southland
About time I went back.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, multiple locations including Crown Casino
Enormous lattes. Why? Decent coffee.

Maxy’s, Glenhuntly Rd, Elsternwick
Liked the atmosphere, coffee, desserts

Sippers Espresso Bar, Bent St, Bentleigh
Coffeelicious. Israeli Shakshuka. Good stuff.

Dodo Internet Café, Chadstone Shopping Centre
Excellent. Good. Mediocre. Terrible. Inconsistent.

Bridge Hotel, Nepean Hwy, Mordialloc
Reliable coffee, decent food, atmosphere

Bonbons, somewhere near you
If memory serves correctly, competent

Rickett’s Point Teahouse, Beach Rd, Black Rock
You’re there for the location

Lolly Jar, Florence St, Mentone
Massive, gigantic lollipops. And coffee.

Good Reasons, Centre Way, Mordialloc
Ain’t bad, but no standout

Café Siesta, Main St, Mordialloc
Looks good, coffee only average

Theobroma Chocolate Lounge, DFO Spencer St, Melbourne
$5 for an average mocha?

From Pete:
Marnie’s, Station St, Seaford
Instant coffee passed as real.

Journal, 251 Flinders Lane, City
Way cool atmosphere. Excellent coffee.

Minx, near cnr Collins & Spencer Streets, City
Tim quite liked this place.

Another from Pete:
Blue Chair, Nepean Hwy, Carrum
Not bad, suits Baby Boomers

Interesting, Pete, but I am not a baby boomer. Should generations X and Y go there? And while we’re at it, who comes up with those ridiculous labels anyway? The person who coined “Generation Y” should be shot for lack of creativity.

I found my new home! New review: The Beach Box, Nepean Hwy, Bonbeach (opposite station):

Coffee, food, service, chairs: MAGIC!

They have the water jug to offset the diuretic effects of strong coffee, table service, thoughtful and interesting conversation, several newspapers, really comfy seats you can go to sleep in. I’d just go after about 11 or you get the morning sun, unless you like the morning sun.

With regards to Marnie’s, maybe you should do a 2nd opinion of it.

With regards to Blue Chair, I go past it regularly and 90% of patrons are over 60 - has no vibe, adequate coffee, awful artwork on walls, uncomfy chairs.

So what about Sydney? Australia’s largest city is not quite as coffee-obsessed as Melbourne, but there are some half decent coffee shops around the Shire (Sutherland Shire for non-Sydney people) where I live.

Here a few I have visited recently:

Michels Patisserie, Miranda Westfield.
Not exactly a coffee shop, but they make the most consistent coffee of any chain.

The Centre, Jannali.
Gloria Jeans Coffee in a non-GJ, e.g. real cups and glasses. Good food and Christian magazines.

Bayswiss, Westfield Miranda.
Consistently reasonable and good reward scheme.

Ice cream shop at Cronulla South beach.
Great coffee, wonderful view, well-priced.

Aromas, Gymea.
Good service, half decent coffee, papers.
Gymea Bay Rd is the coffee strip of the Shire.

More news later!!

Jon, you need to keep it to 5 words. That’s the art.

Markk: “Conquest of the 5-word Coffee…?” … Ahhhh, it’s a Planet of the Apes reference. Clever, cleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvver.

Pete, I notice your original review was a teeny bit more than 5 words.

Anyway, here are some more from the Shire:

Kafenico, Cronulla.
Top coffee though not cheap.

Surfeits, Cronulla.
Great coffee and food.

Cafe Parlo, Cronulla.
Unexpectedly good, remember Mark?

Gloria Jeans, Sutherland.
Shirelive pre-church hangout, not bad!

Tea house at National Camellia Gardens.
Good Devonshire teas- coffee inconsistent.

Beach Box, eh? Sounds awesome! I was wondering if anyone would get the Apes reference.

Some great reviews there jon. Although they are meant to be five words. Are you struggling with that? Was Cafe Parlo the one where we had the cheesecake in the mall area?

Gloria Jeans? Blecch.

Here it comes…..the very interesting “green tea flavoured coffee” ever I had in my life.

Fisherman’s Warf, Tamsui township, Taipei
A treat suprises my tastebud.

Cheers

Jason makes me want to visit Taipei … almost. Jon, I stand corrected.

Perhaps it’s just a postmodernist interpretation of the word “five”
