The Hall Of Shame: really bad coffee shops that must be avoided at all costs

Ever been to a cafe only to find that the coffee was unspeakably vile? You aren’t the only one.

Mobil Roadhouse, Hume Fwy, Seymour
Pure evil in a cup. The worst in Australia? Let’s hope so.

Coolabah Tree Café, Wyong Service Centre, Wyong
Haven’t been there, and won’t ever, after hearing my parents describe the coffee here. It’s the second worst they’ve ever had. (although see cafedave for a second opinion)

Fasta Pasta, Cheltenham Rd, Keysborough
I got conned into a coffee and cake deal here. Or should I say, warm milk and cake. One of the weakest lattes I’ve ever had.

The Lake, McLeod Rd, Patterson Lakes
Pete’s opinion on this place? “Burnt coffee, rude staff, don’t”.

SkyHigh, Mount Dandenong Observatory, Mount Dandenong
Tourist trap.

Georges, Dean St, Albury
Very dodgy coffee, according to Sarah

Quikfix, Sydney Airport
Weak swill, or so I’ve been told. Blecch.

Starbucks

More than 5 words?

Yeah these aren’t five word reviews. Most of them already had five word reviews, and I needed more than five words to describe the awfulness.

I think I’ve finally reached a point where I can look at a place, and sense that I’m more likely to get bad coffee than not, so I just don’t order coffee.

This might be a bit controversial, but from time to time, I’ll go back to a Gloria Jeans and try the coffee there, and I’m inevitably disappointed. It’s no coincidence that my preferred drink there was a caramel latte: the syrup masks the taste of the coffee.

I *almost* put Gloria Jeans in. Almost. I find the quality is highly variable with them. The one at Borders in Chadstone is okay, but others are definitely not.

My sister went to the Surfers Paradise one and said it was awful in every way it was possible for coffee to be. So we’ll add that one to the list.

But I know what you mean about looking at a coffee shop and sussing it out. Just one glance at a latte that someone is halfway through tells you as much as you need to know.

Markk, I can’t tell you how much benefit I get out of the (growing) list of places to try. I use it at least once a month when I have to meet someone. The list of Places to Avoid (I’m sure) is also saving many of us money, not to mention GREAT PAIN!

I also reckon you should get onto YouTube and find the clip where Bart Simpson’s wandering through the shopping mall and every second store is a Starbucks - only to arrive at the last store and be told “Make your choice but be quick. This place is about to be turned into a Starbucks in 40 minutes!”

Good to hear it Pete. I’d be interested to hear any second opinions. Any on the list that need upgrading or downgrading?
