In my time in a relationship, I find myself jealously guarding the “alone time” of my girlfriend and I. It makes me wonder why parents don’t resent their children for obliterating their time alone as a couple.
But that is not the only reason not to have kids; Bad Dad Radio has compiled many others. Here’s one of them:
Lesson 3
A really good way to discover how the nights might feel…
1. Get home from work and immediately begin walking around the living room from 5PM to 10PM carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 8-12 pounds, with a radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly. (Eat cold food with one hand for dinner)
2. At 10PM, put the bag gently down, set the alarm for midnight, and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 12 and walk around the living room again, with the bag, until 1AM.
4. Set the alarm for 3AM.
5. As you can’t get back to sleep, get up at 2AM and make a drink and watch an infomercial.
6. Go to bed at 2:45AM.
7. Get up at 3AM when the alarm goes off.
8. Sing songs quietly in the dark until 4AM.
9. Get up. Make breakfast. Get ready for work and go to work (work hard and be productive)Repeat steps 1-9 each night. Keep this up for 3-5 years. Look cheerful and together.
Just one reason like that would be enough to give one pause for thought; but Bad Dad provides 11. At the end of it all, he advises “it’s all worth it.” Maybe it is, but he certainly doesn’t make it appear so!
The bond that a father or mother has with their children must be very strong indeed.

I can think of several reasons not to have kids. most notably, they can distract you when you are trying to watch baseball games. also, they are not good at holding their liquor.

I think kids are over rated. Besides, not having kids is the most “green” thiing you can do nowadays to reduce your carbon footprint. Think of the combined resources of the planet your kid and their kids and so on will have. Not having a kid means you can live it up and use as many resources as you want. In the final equation, you will be more eco-concious than even the most eco-concious person with one kid.

I had my children at age 23 & 25 and i have to say “Thank God” because there’s no way I could handle (now at age 31) the sleep deprivation, constant crying and general Zombie state that a new parent finds themselves in. You say you have a girlfriend at 30… poor sap… kids in your 30’s is really going to be an eye opener! I’m now in my 30’s and have loads of time with my husband of 12 years. Good luck to you.

Danielle, thanks for the encouragement
I guess I’ll just have to deal with those stresses somehow. My mum had 5 young children when she was in her early 30s. At one point, 3 of those children were below the age of 2. (She had twins.) That was hard, but it can be done, although I am unlikely to have as many children as she did.

I think psi mom has a rather shallow viewpoint. The world is not overpopulated; what we need is not voluntary extinction but better management of resources. By the same logic she uses, the most eco-conscious thing she could do is kill herself. That would really reduce her carbon footprint.
Cohnsey, all you have to do is put them on the leash and attach the leash to something in the backyard! That way your kids can’t hurt themselves and you are free to watch baseball without distractions.
